American Federal Wire and Brass Fender with Scrollwork Decoration
About the Item
American Federal Period thirty eight and a half inch wire and brass fender with artistic decorative scrollwork over arched wire verticals surmounted by a brass top rail. There is a small hole in the brass top rail which was used to latch the fender to the fireplace surround; a small hook would be attached to the fireplace and that would hook through that small hole. This was a safety feature to keep the children from getting to close to the fire, hence these are often referred to as nursery fenders. Circa 1810. Measure: 38 inch.
