About the Item

A fine and unique Antique French Louis XVI-style gilt bronze fireplace screen. The screen is shaped with a rounded rectangular outline, framed by a cast gilt bronze surround that rises into a pierced crest. The crest is ornamented with a central wreath and ribbon, flanked on either side by detailed rooster head terminals. The screen itself is formed of fine black mesh, onto which gilt bronze mounts are applied. At its center is a large lyre motif with scrolling sides and an acanthus finial above. The lower section of the frame is enriched with a festooned drapery mount, centered by a quiver and torch crossed over a leafy branch, all resting above a pair of scrolled supports. The sides of the frame curve outward with scrolling acanthus elements, each terminating in the rooster head finials. Garlands of flowers and foliage extend across the upper section, linking the crest to the sides, while the base rests on shaped scrolling legs with clawed feet. The gilt bronze surface is chased throughout with detailed linear, foliate, and floral ornament, creating strong definition in the mounts. This screen reflects the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary, combining naturalistic motifs such as laurel and acanthus with neoclassical emblems including the lyre, quiver, and torch. The use of rooster heads as cresting elements provides an unusual feature within the style. The gilt bronze construction is consistent with high-quality French production of the late 18th and 19th centuries, where functional fireplace furnishings were made with the same level of detail as ornamental bronzes.
