About the Item
This English oak and brass bucket from the 19th century combines practical construction with sculptural form. Built from vertical oak staves in the traditional coopered manner, the bucket is reinforced with four solid brass bands, each carefully fitted and patinated through time. The upper band is particularly wide, wrapping just below the rim and emphasizing the curved silhouette of the top edge—a distinctive detail that gives the piece an elegant, swooping profile. The warm tone of the oak contrasts beautifully with the polished brass, which has aged to a mellow luster. A swing handle in matching brass is mounted to the sides with classic escutcheon fittings, allowing the bucket to be easily lifted or hung.
Originally intended as a utility piece—possibly for carrying water or coal—this vessel now serves well as a decorative object. It could be used as a planter, a kindling or log holder near the hearth, or simply as an accent in a traditional, rustic, or English country interior. The base shows wear consistent with age and function.
