A fireplace guard with iron diagonal mesh on an iron frame and solid iron sides, and having a brass top rail as well as a secondary brass drying rail. English late 19th century. Also known as a nursery guard, as its original purpose was to keep children and dogs out of the fireplace. Now a decorative addition to a fireplace.
