Large 18th Century French 'Pillars with Fleurs De Lys' Fireback / Backsplash
About the Item
Large 18th century French neoclassical fireback with two pillars of Hercules that are topped with Fleurs de Lys. The Fleurs de Lys (French Lillies) symbolize the purity of nobility. As can be seen on the fireback, they were partially truncated during the French revolution as they stand for royalty and aristocracy throughout Europe. The pillar refers to the club of Hercules, his favorite weapon. It symbolizes strength.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter. The condition is good, without cracks.
