Large Antique Cast Iron English Lion and Unicorn Fireplace Andirons Tool Rests

About the Item

Victorian cast iron lion and unicorn painted black fireplace ornaments. They are symbols of the United Kingdom, the lion stands for England and the unicorn for Scotland. The combination dates back to the 1603 accession of James I of England who was already James VI of Scotland. Can be used as a fireplace tool rest/andirons or just ornamental. The design of this pair is attributed to John Crowley of Sheffield. Measures: Lion is 26 inches wide X 13.5 inches high. Unicorn is 33 inches wide X 16.5 inches high, circa 1860.
