About the Item
An elaborate pair of Renaissance Revival chenets or andirons in gilt brass, each featuring opposing dragon-form supports surmounted by a baluster stem with acanthus ornamentation, terminating in a polished onyx sphere and foliate finial. The design showcases fine casting and sculptural detailing throughout, characteristic of late 19th-century decorative metalwork inspired by Italian and French Renaissance motifs.
The mythical griffin-like creatures at the base symbolize vigilance and protection—traditional emblems in heraldic design—while the natural onyx globes introduce a refined contrast of material and color. Unmarked, but stylistically comparable to the work of American foundries such as Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Co. and The Nashua Foundry, both known for producing high-style brass fireplace furnishings with neoclassical and Renaissance influences during this period.
Dimensions:
Each: 23.5" H × 11.5" W × 21" D
Materials:
Cast brass
Onyx stone spheres
Iron log supports
Condition:
Good condition with age-appropriate wear. Oxidation and patina throughout, light surface rubbing, and minor losses to gilt finish. Cracking to onyx spheres, likely natural to the stone and stable.
Provenance:
The Iris Apfel Collection
About:
Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was a legendary American interior designer, textile authority, and global fashion icon celebrated for her fearless aesthetic and deep appreciation for craftsmanship and history. Alongside her husband Carl, she founded Old World Weavers in 1950, a company specializing in historic textile reproductions and restorations commissioned for the White House and other landmark projects.
Apfel’s interiors were renowned for their bold layering of pattern, color, and texture—always blending European classical references with playful modernity. Her personal collection, from which these chenets come, reflects her lifelong passion for design excellence and historical ornament.
