About the Item

Used during warm months to cover the opening of a fireplace, this French period Regence firescreen with needlepoint inset is from circa 1720. The hand-carved wood frame has motifs in the Regence style, such as the scalloped shell on the bottom that is surrounded by a foliate margent. A large, pierced gadroon leaf embellishes the crown, with the center opening filled by a floret. It is flanked by additional gadrooned leaves that run along the outskirts of the shaped top, before wrapping around the shoulders. The sides are sculpted as well, with an incurve section adorned with yet more gadrooned leaves. High arching feet carved with curled leaves and scalloped shells have small pads that offer stability to the curvaceous firescreen. Set within the frame is a multicolored needlepoint scene featuring hues of cream, green, blue, and red. The center cartouche depicts four robed figures and several animals congregating beneath a tree canopy. It is surrounded by leaf-like scrolls and a wonderful floral display on a gold background. The verso side has been lined with a gold silk embellished with various foliate branches. A perfect decorative accessory for any fireplace, the needlepoint and silk insets can be replaced with the fabric or textile of your choice.

Period French Louis XVI Giltwood Firescreen, circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace. The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving. These elements are surrounded by slightly spiral gadrooning. Beneath the crest is a repeating laurel leaf motif that runs all the way around the border. The ornamentation is double sided.
