Silvered and Gilt Bronze Antique French Fireplace Fender in the Neo-Gothic Style
About the Item
This stunning antique French fireplace is unusual for its stylistic fusion, which combines motifs from a range of different design periods.
Most striking are the neo-Gothic depictions of dragons, which sit at either end of the fender. These take inspiration from medieval heraldic imagery and motifs grounded in the Gothic style. The Gothic style was born in 12th century Paris and quickly spread throughout Europe, where it continued to influence the decorative arts until the 16th century. Importantly, the Gothic style was intent on naturalistic representation of forms, which represented a huge change from the preceding non-naturalistic Byzantine style that had dominated much of European art. This emphasis on naturalism is clearly discernible in the present fender, with the dragons rendered in strikingly realistic detail.
At the centre of the fender is a relief depicting a Classical woman, dressed in a billowing tunic and offering forth garlands of flowers that she holds aloft. This neoclassical design provides a wonderful visual contrast with the dragons on either end of the fender. The fender is further adorned with swirling acanthus and foliate decorations, which are reminiscent of the Rococo style of design.
