About the Item

This extraordinary chimneypiece was originally part of Appuldurcombe House, once the grandest stately home on the Isle of Wight. A fine (and still important) example of English Baroque architecture, Appuldurcombe House was built in the early 1700s by John James for Sir Robert Worsley, it's grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown. This surround was held residence in the Drawing room. Masterfully carved, the large surround has a break front shelf providing a perimeter of finely carved floral and foliage, below which, an egg and dart border sits. Deeply carved florals and plentiful fruits rest below carved putti in caryatids that flank the surround. Floral details can also be seen atop of the footblocks. The level of detail seen in the carvings is remarkable and this captivating fireplace is truly a rare specimen that will provide an unrivalled focal point for an interior space. A rare opportunity to own a piece of notable, architectural history. Appuldurcombe House was reduced to a shell in WW2 by a German bomb. The surround was privately purchased at auction in the 1980s and found a new home in central London. The fireplace was so treasured by its former owner that it was again relocated with him to Bournemouth, it is from here that we acquired the piece. In remarkable condition; a small repair to the left of the opening (see images). Indents to the top of the mantel shelf allow for secure installation. The surround can be viewed at our Hertfordshire warehouse, please contact us for more details.
