19th Century Regency Soane Statuary Marble Mantelpiece

About the Item

An elegant and exceptionally rare 19th century regency statuary marble mantelpiece. Believed to be an original sir John Soane fireplace. Salvaged from a derelict London town house during its renovation period, and discovered behind a wooden covered room panel some 15 years ago. This rare item now available after years of storage is made in finest statuary marble of its time. It is delicately hand-carved with adapted Greek key design, interwoven with morning glory leaves across the frieze and jambs, flanked by fluted pilasters surmounted with carved anthemion corner blocks. This influence leads us to its maker’s character & identity for the period. The floral design of the morning glory also reminds us of the hand painted decorative painting on furniture and cabinet work by George Brookshaw (1751-1823) sir John Soane (1753 – 1837) was one of the most inventive architects of his time. He built the bank of England and Dulwich picture gallery, as well as his own extraordinary home in London. Shelf width 73 3/4" (187 cm) Shelf depth 7" (18 cm) Overall height 54 1/4" (138 cm) Base width 67" (170 cm) Opening width 49 3/4" (126 cm) Opening height 47 1/2" (121 cm) (No internal rebate).
