About the Item

A large and elegant 19th century Regency style Grecian white limestone fireplace surround in the manor of Thomas Hope 1769-1831. A generous shelf with a stepped single bullnose moulding with rounded outer corners, sits above a plain frieze with a central tablet and moulded capping, flanked by tall stepped jambs encompassing splayed front sections with top moulded capping's that lends this piece a slimline feel, all supported on plain foot plates. Shown with its original fireplace insert available separately on our other 1st dibs listings. English, circa 1950 Opening size: 1014mm high x 1005mm wide (width can be increased or decreased be moving the legs in or out) Each leg width 233mm The Welsh Slate hearth shown in the photos will be provided complimentary if both pieces are purchased together, it measures 1625mm wide x 480mm deep x 60mm thick Thomas Hope 1769-1831 was an English luminary and designer of the Regency period, he is well known for fathering classical interiors of the period, but allowing a more uncomplicated look aiming for what we now refer to as contemporary. Grecian white limestone is a sedimentary rock mostly composed of calcite, calcium carbonate and the shells and exoskeletons of marine life, many different variations of limestone occur in nature because of the different conditions that produce this rock. It takes millions of years for limestone to form from sand, shell and mud deposits left by lakes and oceans. Some limestones including this piece contain visible fossil fragments along with calcite and other aragonite materials.
