19th Century Spanish Brass Ball and Claw Foot Brazier / Planter

About the Item
Braziers (known as "braseros" in Spain) were used to heat areas of a home (or castle) by holding burning "picón" or charcoal in its concave bowl. Braziers of various designs have been used for thousands of years throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia to cut the chill in rooms away from the warmth of cooking fires. In Spain, braziers were one of the primary methods of heating homes until the early 20th century. With its golden brass color and decorative "ball and claw" feet, this brazier can add some exotic charm to a sitting area, salon or library - filled not with burning coals but flowers, a large houseplant or perhaps magazines or other odds and ends.

- 19th Century Spanish Arab Style Copper Two-Handled Jug with Wrought Iron StandLocated in Madrid, ESCopper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...Category

- Pair of 19th Century Spanish Brass Neoclassical Church Altar CandlesticksLocated in Madrid, ESThis classic pair of 19th century Spanish church altar candlesticks are of large size (over one-half meter or 26 inches tall) and can make for an eye-catching accent in a wide variety of interiors - mixing well in traditional settings or presenting a dramatic moment of contrast within a clean and modern environment. Originally used in a religious context, their simple architectural baluster forms are easily adaptable to the secular world. The brass is bright, but not overly polished, having a subtle and authentic patina of age and use. The use of candles has been part of the Catholic ritual since probably the 12th, and definitely the 13th century. Bishop William Durand of Mende (c. 1230-96) wrote in his Rationale Divinorum Officiorum that "at both corners of the altar a candlestick is placed to signify the joy of two Peoples who rejoiced at the birth of Christ," and "the cross is placed on the altar between two candlesticks." The use of candles was widespread and well-documented by the 16th century with at least two lit during any celebration, and four or six candles used for Sunday Mass or a holy day...Category
