19th Century Spanish Copper Container with Two Handles and Cross Mark

About the Item

Hammered, riveted and soldered in 19th century Spain, this copper container was made for common household use, but with its sculptural form and rich color it surpasses its rough beginnings to become a thing of beauty. The handles are attached with large hammered rivets, and on the upper "front" is an incised cross mark, its purpose unknown. Around the lower part of the jug can be seen a fine geometric, zig-zagging "dovetail seam" where two pieces of copper were "cramped" or hammered together while molten brass was dripped into the seam and smoothed over to strengthen the joint. Creating a seam in this way was strictly a hand process, and the particularly small size of the interlocking pieces demonstrates a high level of skill and craftsmanship. On one side there is a period repair where a hole has been repaired with a plug of solder. These repairs are fairly common on older copper pieces, and testify to their value, a copper jug with a hole would not be simply discarded, but repaired for further use.

This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...
