Antique French Mantel Fireplace Surround Breton Brittany Carved Dark Oak

About the Item

Antique French Mantel Fireplace Surround Breton Brittany Carved Dark Oak . Direct from France, this gorgeous statement piece will add elegance and distinction to any home and is well suited for either new construction or a remodel. Originating from the Brittany region of France, this fabulous mantel’s Celtic roots are evident with its distinctive Breton style reflected in the elaborate carvings. Dual “Ship’s wheel” carved panels flank the large carved center panel that depicts a woman in period dress, surrounded by a flock of sheep and her beloved hound resting nearby, with trees, mountains, and a village in the distance. An exquisitely carved full figure Breton man stands on the left column with his carved Breton lady on the right. These are hallmark features of the Brittany style, which reflected symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress that represented a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. Most probably a commissioned piece, circa1880, this mantel is heavy, sturdy, well built by craftsmen of the period. Measurements: 46” ht. x 62.25” x 14.25”. Opening is 28.75” ht. x 39”. NOTE: All of our antiques are direct from Europe. I personally select each item for the quality, design, and unique characteristics that you will always find in our distinctive inventory at Geaux Vintage Antiques. …”with all that, why ‘Geaux’ anywhere else?” …

Antique French Carved Bonnetiere Armoire Cabinet Brittany Breton Ship Spindle. Direct from France, a lovely antique French armoire or “bonnetiere” cabinet, with gorgeous hand carvings throughout. The slender, smaller size makes a “bonnetiere” highly sought after for today’s home, as they can easily be placed in a variety of locations. Of course, the term “bonnetiere” comes from these early 18th and 19th century cabinets that were used for the elaborate ladies’ bonnets and linens. NOTE: The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. All these Breton carved features are present in this cabinet! The crown features a wide band of open “ships wheel” spindles with carvings to either side. The full-length door has three different carved panels with half circle “spindle” designs on the upper and lower portions. The center panel has corner spindles framing the round carved panel...
