Antique French Child Doll High Chair Brittany Breton Ship Spindle Carved Dark Oak.
Direct from France, and quite a rare find, this lovely hand carved 19th century high chair!
NOTE: The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are always noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.
Distinctive Breton carved features are present throughout in this petite chair, with the top rail featuring two bands of open “ships wheel” spindle above and below carved cross rails. The center splat has a full circular “ships wheel” set within a hand carved panel, having another band of open spindles below. Thick carved arms and carved arm supports, with a fully carved chair seat. The carved details are simply amazing!! Original dark finish, well built by craftsmen of the period, c1890.
With all the lovely features, true to it’s Brittany origins, we love this chair for a beautiful accent piece in your dining room or country kitchen (although it obviously doesn’t meet 21st century safety requirements).
