Antique French Nero Marquina Marble Fireplace Mantel, Circa 1880

About the Item

Featuring Louis XIV-style elements, this French fireplace mantel was hand-carved circa 1880 out of an elegant nero marquina marble. Quarried in the town of Marquina, in the Basque Country, this marble was quite popular during the 1800’s, often used as flooring and for fireplaces. The deep black stone has variegated white veining throughout, enhancing the beauty of the stone, which is magnified by the smoothly carved moldings. Most noticeably, the firebox opening has a luscious half-round border that is two inches thick. The feet are augmented by a six-inch thick protruding bolection and the lintel has several thin layers of molding. A bronze rosette medallion, set within beading and a foliate ring, graces each side, also functioning as a vent. Our nero marquina mantel can instantly transform any fireplace into a work of art, whether it is in a living room, den, or bedroom. It is equally at home in a contemporary interior design as it is in a traditional. Firebox opening: 35 1/8 H x 34 3/4 W.

  • 18th Century French Fireplace Mantel in Carved Limestone
    Located in Dallas, TX
This beautiful antique French fireplace mantel was carved in stone during the late 18th century. It’s quite an unusual example in that falls into the transitional style of Louis XV and XVI. This was a short period of time in the 1700s when the opulent rocaille forms were transitioning into the Neoclassical of Louis XVI. The fireplace has an impressive, deep stance, with a slightly bowed or “galbee” lintel. The bottom of the lintel is composed of a series of rounded and incurved moldings, shaped in the classic crossbow or serpentine form that was so popular in the early to mid-1700s. What makes this piece stand out from other French Louis XV mantels...
