Antique Louis XVI Limestone Fireplace Mantel from Beaune, France, Circa 1785
About the Item
Hand-carved in five sections, this limestone fireplace mantel hails from the commune of Beaune, in eastern France. Dating to about 1785, the carvings are definitively period Louis XVI, most noticeably the center trophy medallion and the sinuous, triglyph legs. The limestone has a lovely cream color with a mottling of green and black patina. The rear portion of the legs have been left rough cut, as these were originally inserted into the wall to anchor the mantel.
In the center of the lintel is a Neoclassical trophy of a quiver of arrows crossing over a lit torch, tied together by a ribbon. A partial floral wreath can be seen beneath and the entire grouping is flanked by horizontal rectangles. Both ends have been adorned with a leaf that curls upwards towards a protruding molding at the top of the lintel. The ogee legs have a rectangular embellishment at the top, positioned above Doric-style fluting with three channels. Our Louis XVI mantel from Beaune will make a fantastic surround for a fireplace in just about any style house.

- 18th Century French Fireplace Mantel in Carved LimestoneLocated in Dallas, TXThis beautiful antique French fireplace mantel was carved in stone during the late 18th century. It’s quite an unusual example in that falls into the transitional style of Louis XV and XVI. This was a short period of time in the 1700s when the opulent rocaille forms were transitioning into the Neoclassical of Louis XVI. The fireplace has an impressive, deep stance, with a slightly bowed or “galbee” lintel. The bottom of the lintel is composed of a series of rounded and incurved moldings, shaped in the classic crossbow or serpentine form that was so popular in the early to mid-1700s. What makes this piece stand out from other French Louis XV mantels...Category

- Antique French Nero Marquina Marble Fireplace Mantel, Circa 1880Located in Dallas, TXFeaturing Louis XIV-style elements, this French fireplace mantel was hand-carved circa 1880 out of an elegant nero marquina marble. Quarried in the town of Marquina, in the Basque Country, this marble was quite popular during the 1800’s, often used as flooring and for fireplaces. The deep black stone has variegated white veining throughout, enhancing the beauty of the stone, which is magnified by the smoothly carved moldings. Most noticeably, the firebox opening has a luscious half-round border that is two inches thick. The feet are augmented by a six-inch thick protruding bolection and the lintel has several thin layers of molding. A bronze rosette medallion, set within beading and a foliate ring, graces each side, also functioning as a vent. Our nero marquina mantel...Category
