Antique Irish Fireplace Mantle in Mitchelstown Marble


Purchased in 1961 from a mid-18th century house in Co. Cork Ireland prior to its demolition. The items have been storage since then. An unusual mid-18th century Irish chimneypiece of Cork Mitchelstown marble to the design of Jacob Rothery. With open topped swan neck pediment with white statuary floral decorated volutes flanking a statuary capped pedestal on wasted socle, resting on a moulded shelf, which breaks over the jambs. The frieze and jambs of plain undecorated slabs, the blocks flanking the frieze decorated with flutes. The opening framed with simple incised mouldings. The whole resting on foot blocks, circa 1740.
