About the Item

AN IMPORTANT GEORGE III DOVE-GREY AND STATUARY MARBLE CHIMNEY-PIECE, DESIGNED BY JAMES PAINE (1717–1789), CIRCA 1765. Aperture 50in.(127cm) high x 54in.(137cm) wide. Provenance: Axwell Park, County Durham. Axwell Park was built for Sir Thomas Clavering (1719-1794) to the designs of the great neoclassical architect James Paine. Building commenced in 1758. The distinctive design of carved ribbon-tied floral swags was used recurrently by Paine in his designs for chimneypiece friezes, as for instance at Weston Park in Staffordshire and Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire. The present chimneypiece was photographed by Bedford Lemere in the Billiard Room at Axwell in 1886.
