FIREPLACE IN PEPERINO WITH THREE EIGHT-POINTED STARS Tuscany 20th Century
About the Item
FIREPLACE IN PEPERINO WITH THREE EIGHT-POINTED STARS Tuscany 20th Century
Made of Peperino di Vitorchiano, made in nine pieces. On the architrave we have carved three beautiful eight-pointed stars, typical of the architectural iconography of Tuscia. For more information on the eight-pointed star read the description (read below). In Tuscia the eight-pointed stars were mainly carved on the Profferli (read below).
The fireplace has a maximum width of 150 cm and is high (including base 136 cm). The mouth of the fire measures LXH 93 x 90 cm.
Various information on the 8-pointed star:
The profferlo (from the late Latin proferŭlum, in turn derived from the Greek, «placed in front») is a typical element of civil architecture of the Middle Ages.
It consists of a staircase with a single ramp that runs along the facade of the building. At the top of the stairs, a small loggia precedes the entrance door of the house.
Below the stairs, a half arch opens up, enclosing the access to the ground floor area, generally used as a shop, cellar or, more rarely, a stable.
The area where the profferlo is most widespread is Lazio, particularly in the Viterbo area (in Viterbo, Tuscania, Vitorchiano...). In Viterbo, you can admire simple but evocative ones in the streets of the medieval districts of San Pellegrino and Pianoscarano. Much more refined and elegant, however, is the one in Casa Poscia in via Saffi.
The eight-pointed star is a symbol that we often find in religious and architectural contexts. Together with the octagon, the wheel of life (the circular version of the star with its eight rays) and the eight-petalled rose, it represents cosmic balance and is a symbol of renewal and rebirth.
The 8-pointed star was also carved in bas-relief as an “8-rayed Sun” also called an “8-pointed Star”.
It is the Star that indicates the right path, the correct direction. It is no coincidence that in various works of art, on the Madonna’s cloak, at shoulder height, an “8-pointed Star” appears. The “Stella Maris”. Like all figures (both flat and solid) of Euclidean geometry connected to the number 8, the “8-pointed Star” can also be traced back to the esoteric meanings of the so-called “Octonyrian Principle”.
