About the Item

By Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley (1847-1919), an outstanding fireplace in the Louis XV style and produced out of Sarrancolin marble, decorated in bronze and incorporating two sculpted figures seated on the angles and supporting two bronze candelabras. Based on a model created by Contant d'Ivry around 1752-1753 for the fireplace in the sitting room of the Duchess of Orlean at the Palais-Royal and executed in bronze by François-Thomas Germain (drawing conserved at the Musée des Arts decorative (Museum of Decorative Arts) in Paris - inv. 8530). Our fireplace corresponds to that exhibited by E. A. Beurdeley at the Chicago Exhibition in 1893 and it was widely reported at the time that it was “made for a wealthy American” who was none other than Cornelius II Vanderbilt. The Exhibition being spoken about here, as well as the Beurdeley stand, were both commented upon by the columnist from the Gazette des Beaux-Arts: "it would be difficult not to speak (…) about M. Beurdeley’s splendid exhibition who has sent Chicago a true Museum". Among the works displayed was "a Louis XV fireplace made for a wealthy American (fig. 130) and a pair of blue turquoise porcelain horns from China whose frame is decorated with a blue enamel frieze on silver of exquisite finesse and taste." By 1894, our fireplace could be found in Cornelius II Vanderbilt’s residence in New York, on the corner of 5th Avenue and 57th Street, adorning the large sitting room whose decor evoked the works of Allard, Dasson and Sormani. Beurdeley Alfred Emmanuel Louis (1847-1919): Son of Louis Auguste Alfred, born in Paris on 11th August; first becoming his assistant then his successor. He kept the shop situated at rue Louis-le-Grand, the pavillon de Hanovre, and had his workshops at 20 and 24 rue Dautancourt. The company continued to prosper, specializing only in manufacturing up-market furniture and copied from older models in which only a few were produced. He participated in the exhibition of 1878 and according to the report, "maintaining the high reputation of the company founded by his father. He has given it a new found luster through his leadership, his discerning taste..." An avid art enthusiast just like his father, he put together an important collection of art objects and paintings. He carried this on until about 1895 before liquidating the business and selling his collections.
