About the Item

Hand-carved in the style of Louis XVI, this striking French wood mantel dates to the 1900s. Decorative motifs during the reign of Louis XVI were inspired by ancient civilizations (Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc.), thanks to the rediscoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The ebonized wood has a wonderful dark chocolate color that is enhanced by numerous gilt bronze mounts on the lintel and legs. A supple cornice adorns the top of the lintel, with more prominent molding below. In between is an interlace of carved Vitruvian waves filled with three distinct gilt rosettes surrounded by golden leaves. The repeating flowers are flanked by rectangular florets (also gilt bronze) that align over the pilaster legs. A golden olive wreath drapery surmounts a large leaf located at the top of each leg. Two wide flutes, known as chandelles, embellish the bottom of the leg, partially filled with leaf buds, just above a large bronze leaf. The feet are stepped out, providing stability for the 33” H x 43” W firebox opening. Our unique Louis XVI-style ebonized mantel with well-detailed bronze dore mounts can be used in any room needing a bold and elegant fireplace.

18th Century French Fireplace Mantel in Carved Limestone
Located in Dallas, TX
This beautiful antique French fireplace mantel was carved in stone during the late 18th century. It’s quite an unusual example in that falls into the transitional style of Louis XV and XVI. This was a short period of time in the 1700s when the opulent rocaille forms were transitioning into the Neoclassical of Louis XVI. The fireplace has an impressive, deep stance, with a slightly bowed or “galbee” lintel. The bottom of the lintel is composed of a series of rounded and incurved moldings, shaped in the classic crossbow or serpentine form that was so popular in the early to mid-1700s. What makes this piece stand out from other French Louis XV mantels...

Period French Louis XVI Giltwood Firescreen, circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace. The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving. These elements are surrounded by slightly spiral gadrooning. Beneath the crest is a repeating laurel leaf motif that runs all the way around the border. The ornamentation is double sided. Large Period Louis XVI French Painted Overdoor or Headboard, circa 1790
Located in Dallas, TX
Originally an overdoor from a boiserie room at a French chateau, this large architectural was hand-carved during the Louis XVI period, circa 1790. The overdoor is roughly rectangular, with the exception of the stepped bottom molding, which would have been necessary to fit over the door frame. In the center of the overdoor is a classical urn adorned with imbricated disks and gadrooning and topped with a pinecone finial. The vessel is surrounded by an ovate border embellished with bead and reel, an oval floret, scrolls, and foliage. Two bundled leaf swags emanate from the top of the medallion, flowing in opposite directions, with crinkled ribbon loosely twirled around the greenery. An additional crinkled ribbon is wrapped around the garland just before the swag feeds through a hoop and turns downwards. Prominent molding with several thick layers surrounds the low-relief carvings, providing a nice border to the architectural panel. The wood has been painted a grayish-green color, sometimes referred to as “French gray”, which is a very neutral color that can be paired with many interior color palettes. Our Louis XVI painted overdoor...
