George III Neoclassical Statuary and Sienna Marble Fireplace

About the Item

Two white marble side projecting female terms, set on Sienna marble panels, are below tall acanthus leaf capitals and urn corner blocks. An exquisitely carved centre tablet depicts Clio, the muse of epic poetry and history, in a reclining position with an open book held in her left hand. At either side of the centre tablet are statuary marble frieze panels, inlaid with Sienna marble to form Greek-key patterns. The fireplace opening is framed by a wide and fluted architrave moulding. The richly coloured convent Sienna marble used in this fireplace is of the highest quality. Because of its rarity and high value, this semi-precious material was only ever used in the finest fireplaces.
