About the Item

Rare carved wood paneling with a fleur-de-lis latticework featuring a mascaron depicting a chubby child's head and a humanized moon from the era of King Louis XIV (between 1650 and 1700). It will transform your bedroom into the stately chamber of the greatest king of France. The carving is remarkable throughout the height of this paneling. With a very rectilinear and somewhat massive structure, this rare paneling still exhibits a strong influence from the "Haute époque" and Louis XIII styles. The highly structured moldings of its bas-relief carved paneling highlight the remarkable work of this fleur-de-lis latticework, which gives this paneling its decorative richness, magnifying the head of the young man in the mascaron (Louis XIV not yet the "Sun King"?) and the humanized moon symbolizing the light of the night. This paneling must have been part of a complete paneling, certainly for a bedroom given its dimensions, in a stately home in the French provinces. The entire woodwork structure is period, as you can see on the back of the trumeau. However, the mirror likely replaced a painting around the 1700s, and the mirror is later. This woodwork should be considered as part of an overall project (see the photomontage in the photo gallery) in a historic home before restoring its patina, which is in good condition. The sale price includes delivery within continental Europe. For other destinations, please contact us for a delivery quote. Depending on your project to restore the historical character of your home, we can put you in touch with our cabinetmaking partner to plan the retrofitting of this woodwork into your project.
