Mantelpiece Adorned with Egyptian-Inspired Motifs

About the Item

This mantelpiece adorned with Egyptian-inspired decorations was crafted in three types of marble around 1830. The bases and capitals of the jambs, as well as the mantel, are made of Portoro marble, while the jambs and lintel are carved from Carrara Statuary marble, enhanced with applications of Valencia Yellow marble sculpted in low-relief. The lintel features a design inspired by both the scarab, a sacred animal, and the winged solar disk, a symbol associated with divinity, royalty, and power in ancient Egypt. On either side lie two women, resting on their stomachs. Their sensual attire evokes certain elements of Egyptian dress, and they wear a vulture crown, traditionally worn by royal wives and female pharaohs. They each hold a duck in their hands, modeled after a cosmetic spoon dated to the reign of Amenhotep III (1390-1352 B.C.E.), housed in the Louvre Museum. The jambs are also decorated with female figures, similarly dressed and coiffed. They carry a bag in one hand and a vase on their shoulders. The sculptor appears to have drawn inspiration here from the Cosmetic Spoon with a Water Carrier (circa 1327-1186 B.C.E.), also preserved in the Louvre Museum. The mantel was replaced in the early 20th century. Minor damage on the frieze.

Fireback Adorned with an Egyptian-Inspired Low-Relief
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
The design of this modern fireplace plaque draws inspiration from the art of ancient Egypt. On the left, a man wearing an usekh collar and dressed in a shendyt (the traditional Egyptian loincloth) leans on a staff and converses with a woman facing him, separated from him only by a papyrus plant. The woman also wears a wide usekh collar and a large draped garment that covers only her back, revealing her nudity at the front. She holds a papyrus. The man and woman are connected by overlapping friezes of geometric Egyptian-inspired motifs, echoing the ornamental structure of the usekh collars. The scene was inspired by an Egyptian low-relief decorating the lid of an ivory casket...
