About the Item

This 19th-century Qajar Persian coal scuttle pairs traditional metalwork with an unexpectedly modern silhouette. Its hand-hammered, exaggerated crescent form and looping handle evoke a sense of movement and whimsy-bordering on the surreal. Though rooted in utility, the piece reads more like a sculptural study in negative space, volume, and asymmetry. Delicate incised tooling traces the body with stylized leafy sprays, nested medallions, and scrolling paisley forms-ornamental motifs closely tied to Persian design and textile traditions. These flourishes, layered over the organic, bulbous form, create a compelling tension between intricate surface detail and boldly abstract silhouette. While originally intended as a coal scuttle, its sculptural form lends itself beautifully to contemporary use-perfect for holding kindling by the hearth, magazines in a sitting room, or even mail on a large desk. It also stands alone as a striking decorative object. The result is an object that feels centuries ahead of its time-proto-modernist in its sculptural ambition and a striking example of the crossover between functional object and decorative art.
