“The Reims Snail” by Alfred Lefebvre (1845–1916), a enameled cast iron stove

About the Item

This rare and exceptional antique enameled cast iron stove, titled *"L'Escargot rémois"*, features a large, stylized snail crawling over a broad leaf. Created around 1890, it is notable for its vivid polychrome finish and unique design. The stove was recognized in 1892 by the Society of Agriculture, Sciences, and Arts of the Marne, which awarded a gold medal to its designer, Alfred Lefebvre. Still in production in the early 20th century by the Parisian manufacturer G. Duhayon, it bears Lefebvre’s mark. A native of Trépail born in 1845 into a modest family, Lefebvre rose from humble beginnings as a stove fitter to become a respected manufacturer of heating and hydrotherapy devices in Reims. His showroom at 80 Place Drouet-d’Erlon was renowned for both its innovative stoves—like *L’Escargot rémois*, *Poêle Fulgore*, and *Malgré tout*—and for his remarkable collection of over 300 antique firebacks. He installed heating systems in major buildings across Reims, including the general hospital and public baths, earning a reputation for high-quality, long-lasting equipment. His fireback collection, partially exhibited in 1895, later entered museums in France and Belgium.
