About the Item

This antique enameled cast iron stove, known as the "Rémois Snail," depicts a snail moving across a large leaf and is distinguished by its remarkable polychromy. Designed around 1890 by Alfred Lefebvre, it was awarded a gold medal by the Société d'agriculture, des sciences et des arts de la Marne in 1892. Still marketed at the beginning of the 20th century, this model bears the name of its creator, an emblematic figure of Reims. Born in Trépail in 1845 into a modest background, Lefebvre became a renowned specialist in heating and hydrotherapy. He set up his workshop at 80 Place Drouet-d'Erlon in Reims, where he also exhibited his exceptional collection of antique firebacks. A prolific inventor, he equipped several buildings in Reims, including the General Hospital, and guaranteed his installations for eighteen years. His shop, a true local curiosity, bore witness to his expertise and his taste for regional heritage.
