A Solid Brass Fireplace Fender, c. 1880

About the Item

Constructed of a solid brass frame cast in parts and embossed with acanthus leaves. The central fender is flanked by stepped pedestals topped by solid brass lions connected by a central bar, also of solid brass. The overall design is neo-classical and dates to the Napoleon III period of the mid-to-late 19th Century. The piece appears to have been cleaned regularly, with only modest amounts of soot accumulating in the center directly in front of the firebox. The classical details are handsomely set off by unadorned surfaces, making this antique fireplace fender and ideal choice for a traditional or modern home.
