A Pair of Alfred Corneau Cast Iron Garden Urns, c. 1880
About the Item
A pair of 19th century French cast iron Garden urns made by Alfred Corneau at his Charleville foundry. The iron garden urns are adorned with well-detailed griffin handles, lobed bowls and a stepped base. They are quite heavy and covered in layers of old, cracked paint. The Corneau brothers Emile and Alfred became business partners in 1846, by 1856 they had set up in the Petit-Bois district of Charleville, and 3 years later in 1859 they opened foundry Corneau Frères, known for stoves, heaters and household cast iron ornamental items. This fine pair of French cast iron garden urns is emblematic of the Napoleon III period. Their interiors are rusty and it appears they were still in use recently. They make beautiful garden ornaments or interior decor accents. The Corneau stamp is visible at the base.
