Impressive Pair of Handyside Cast Iron Garden Urns

About the Item

An impressive pair of Handyside cast iron garden urns with fluting, on turned socle and square plinth base Andrew Handyside bought the Britannia Iron Works in 1848, they were renowned for the quality of their castings and were commissioned to manufacture many public bridges and monuments, in 1871 they manufactured London's Albert Suspension Bridge. Receiving distinctions at the Great Exhibition in 1850, the quality of their casts were exceptional and became more exceptional with time This model is illustrated in the Handyside foundry catalogue published in the mid 19th century as number 6 (see attached image from their catalogue) Very good condition with no chips or cracks, layers of old paint most probably with the original green colour coming through.
