About the Item

A magnificently wide and substantially elegant early 19th century Regency brass, iron and steel fire grate basket in the Greco-Roman manner. A slow arched back plate with scalloped sides centered by a grate comprising of four geometric rings linked by-and supported with cushion spacers. Flanked by polished side posts capped by flambeau finials- supporting wide polished brass side wing sections, below an apron of fluted pierced steel with intermittent circular rosettes. All supported on high half fluted column Balustrade Andirons surmounted by a pair of large urns with swags and tied ribbon festoons, and capped with flambeau finials. Provenance: Cornwall Terrace, Hyde Park, London, England, circa 1823 In Regency architecture, a ring or circle is an omnipresent, universal symbol with extensive meaning. Without beginning or end, without sides or corners this geometric shape tells about perfection, unity, spirituality and life like no other form. Cornwall Terrace, Hyde Park, London was designed and built in 1821-1823 by the renowned architect John Nash (1752-1835) he included several signature Nash influences such as the Greco-Roman exterior style, in drawing comparisons with that style, the baluster Andirons on this fire grate pay homage to John Nash’s building and as such are designed to reflect that exterior design. Measures: Basket burning area 560 mm wide x 270 mm high x 200 mm deep. Slow arched back plate size 652 mm high x 625 mm wide Overall andirons width 1002 mm.
