About the Item

This antique Louis XVI style marble fireplace mantle is carved from burgundy marble with striking gray and white veining and imbued with symbolism. In the center of the apron, two laurel branches cross, forming a backdrop to a rosette with flowing ribbon ends. To the left and right of this carving, matching floral motifs embedded in a square frame sit above angled jambs, which feature flowing acanthus leaves at the top. The shelf is finished with a slightly squared off edge. An early to mid 19th century Louis XVI style piece, this piece epitomizes "Louis Seize" - a style of architecture, furniture, decoration, and art just before the French Revolution. Designs in this style hearkened back to the purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Greeks. Each of the carvings in this mantel carries symbolism. In the apron, the laurel branches symbolize cultured intellect, as the laurel is sacred to Apollo, the god of music, prophecy, and poetry. Similarly, acanthus leaves have been used throughout design to signify taste, elegance, and classic beauty. This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to room 40H. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase. Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, the original hearth is not included. Kindly confirm the condition before purchasing. Please note, this item is located in our Scranton, PA location.

Louis XV Hand Carved French Marble Mantel Rouge Royale
Located in New York, NY
Rich oxblood with white, gray, and eggplant veining, this marble mantel was imported from Europe by Danny Alessandro & Edwin Jackson Mantel Company and carved out of rouge royale - a marble characterized by the presence of white calcite veins. In his Dictionary of Trade and Industry, Blanqui described this marble as, "This marble with a red background, mixed with white, and sometimes blue, is extracted in the town of Franchimont, near Philippeville, in the province of Namur. In all the Belgian marbles, it is the one that was most frequently used in the decoration of monuments: in the palace of Versailles, the Louvre, Palais Royal, and in many other public and private buildings." This piece epitomizes the emerging design aesthetics of the Louis XV period, characterized by curved forms, lightness, and comfort. True to its period, minimal lines highlight the panels on the vertical supports as well as across the serpentine apron, which features a carved shell with scrolls and leaves at the center. One feature to note: The side panels have round bronze vent covers...
