Apollo's Fountain, a Unique Bronze Copy after the Original Group in Versailles

$3,104,497.38Asking Priceper set

Apollo rising from the Water on the Sun Chariot is a famous gilded lead group sculpture, built between 1668 and 1671 by Jean-Baptiste Tuby for King Louis XIV at the Palace of Versailles. Situated in the middle of Appolo's fountain, in the central axis of the Palace of Versailles park, this majestic work is based on the legend of Apollo, the Sun god and the King's icon. It features the god bursting forth from the water in anticipation of his daily flight above the earth. Tuby made this monumental group in the Gobelins manufacture, then transported it to Versailles in 1670 and put it in place the following year. Thanks to an exceptional authorization obtained from the authorities in early 2008, a copy of this work was able to be made, for the first time since the work was created, by a team of sculptors led by Gilles Perrault, a specialist in French art from the 17th and the 18th century and a former restorer at the Palace of Versailles. This copy (produced on a scale of two-thirds of the size of the original sculpture) was created in the purest spirit of the late 17th century, using the lost-wax casting technique so that the fluidity of the sculpture was retained. Indeed, the quality of the reproduction can be seen in the tiniest details, from the suppleness of the reins, the drapery, the toga and the chariot decoration down to the feet of the Sun god. 4 years were necessary to make this outstanding and unique piece. It is composed of 21 different elements. Apollo on his chariot, which is the most important of all, has 1,75m. The set will need to be installed on a surface of 9,30m in diameter in order to respect the original layout of the sculptures. It is recommended to have a basin of 18m in diameter to give the fountain all its magnificence.
