About the Item

Exceptional and high-quality early 20th century white Carrara marble wellhead with intricate carvings raised an octagonal two-step marble base, circa 1920s. The provenance of the wellhead is from the gardens of a mansion of the Gilded Age in CT, please see photo of the park. The wellhead and its base have been stored for over 20 years when the mansion was sold. Intricate and very detailed carvings showing a festive scene of putties with grapes and vines and music, all placed in a landscape with natural elements all around the wellhead. The octagonal marble steps in two layers are numbered for matching assemblage. One of the stairs is broken, but matches perfectly, please refer to the detailed photos. As the wellhead and the base had been stored in parts, we reassembled the photographed parts in photoshop for the primary image to give the buyer an impression on how the wellhead looks assembled, as the old color photograph from the park where the wellhead was installed, doesn't show the quality and detail. Besides the digital assemblage nothing has been virtually changed, so what you see is what you get. The wellhead is in very good condition, with a nice patina and all detailed carvings are complete, nothing is missing or broken. There two versions to install the base, flat on the ground, which creates a two-step effect or sunken in the ground as shown on the old color photo. As the space for photographs is limited, please reach out and we will provide you with detailed additional images of the wellhead and the base. Measurements: Wellhead - diameter 51 inches x height 32 inches. Base - Larger level of steps diameter / largest distance on the flat side of steps 92 inches Smaller level of steps diameter / largest distance on the flat side of steps 70 inches, the step depth is 11 inches. Each level of steps has a height of 5.5 inches, both steps are 11 inches high, the total height of wellhead and steps is 43 inches. The weight of the wellhead and the base is plus/minus 2500 lbs.

A very fine and exceptionally carved Italian 19th-20th century Baroque Revival style whimsical white Carrara marble wishing wellhead, raised on an octagonal two-step marble base. The intricately carved marble relief circular wellhead depicting carved figures of dancing and cheerful children (Putti) among vines, flowers and fruits, dancing and playing musical instruments with a backdrop of castles, landscapes, forests and wreaths, Florence, circa, 1900.
