Carved Limestone Fountain Mascaron Spout from the Gard Region of France, 20th C

About the Item

Hand-carved in the Gard region (a department in the South of France) during the 1900’s, this fountain mascaron spout depicts a heavily bearded man. The face, which has been carved in high relief, emanates from a 4 ½” thick rectangular block. There are traces of moss and lichen buildup, which has given the dark gray stone some areas of brownish-green pigmentation. The mouth of our French mascaron spout has been carved as an exit for a water feature that can be paired with a pool or fountain basin.

Condition:

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good strong condition, with minor nicks and losses. Some lichen and moss buildup, which has given the dark gray stone areas of brownish-green patina. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements.
