About the Item

Pewter fountain and basin with a scene of Saint George and the dragon A pewter shell-shaped basin, raised on two claw feet with a scalloped rim and a straight, upright backplate with a relief scene of Saint George and the dragon, supported by two graceful scrolls. A metal rod is attached to the back, reinforcing the pewter. Above hangs an acorn-shaped water reservoir with a soldier as a valve. Three ancient (Thaler) coins hang from rings with lion heads. The spout has a dragon's head with a rotating valve shaped like an angel's head. Marked three times on the front and faded. It appears to have a German pewter mark depicting an angel in an oval circle, and the date is possibly the second half of the 18th century, given the edge of the pewter mark. Saint George and the Dragon is a famous Christian legend in which Saint George, a Roman soldier, defeats a fearsome dragon and rescues the princess. The princess was chosen as the next sacrifice, as they had no more livestock or trinkets for the dragon. They began sacrificing a human once a day.

Robert Michiels (1933), iron sculpture
Located in Delft, NL
Robert Michiels (1933), iron sculpture An iron sculpture in the shape of an animal head raised on a round base, made by Robert Michiels, Belgium, signed. In 1966 Robert received the Jeune Sculpture Belgium prize, the following year the Hainaut Prize and in 1969 first prizes at the Paris Biennale and the Antwerp Biennale Middelheim. Robert Michiels works with industrial components and materials. He uses them to build human characters, animals or strange insects, often with a touch of surrealism and humour. Because the material comes from our society, the works are reminiscent of New Realism and his sculptures are often described with the term existentialism. Because he often works with metal, Robert often uses a grinding wheel and welding machine...
