Carved Italian Limestone Garden Bench with Fleur De Lys and Acanthus Decoration

About the Item

Hand-carved in Italy, this limestone garden bench features elaborate foliate motifs, including a fleur de lys and acanthus leaves. Consisting of six carved pieces of stone, the beautiful bench has developed a phenomenal dark gray patina over the light gray stone. The four-inch thick seat with luxurious quarter-round molding is flanked by two arms with a slightly recessed corbel fronted by a curled acanthus leaf on top of a volute scroll. Directly under each arm is a shapely foot also embellished with a partial leaf curl over a scroll. The stone that comprises the backrest is adorned with two lively floral and foliate margents that emanate from the base of a shaped shield. The shield is charged with a large fleur de lys, located in the center of the backrest. A pair of volutes form the arching crest, terminating in acanthus cups with a trail of beading. With a seating area of over five feet, our carved limestone garden bench can comfortably seat three adults in any outdoor setting.

  • 17th Century French Semis De Fleur De Lys Cast Iron Fireback, Mitre and Crozier
    Located in Dallas, TX
First used about 450-500 years ago to reflect and disperse heat from a fire, firebacks were often cast with themes specific to the homeowner. Sometimes the iron would feature a familial coat of arms, or in the case of this 17th century semis de fleur de lys fireback, decorative motifs would represent the owner. The rectangular fireback has an arched top and a thick multi-layered molding along all edges. In the center is a raised heraldic shield with multiple fleur de lys charges, arranged in a pattern known as semis. A crinkled ribbon transverses the top edge, beneath a papal mitre and crozier topped with a volute leaf, indicating that the original owner was possibly a member of the church, possibly even a bishop. The iron has developed a fascinating chalky gray patina and can still be used functionally in a traditional fireplace...
