From our recent Japanese acquisitions travels Unique cast antique lantern find This gourd shaped hand cast lantern is only the second one of these we have seen ion over ten ears of handling Fine Japanese art. In addition to its unique shape, it is emblellished with many unusual cutout designs including auspicious symbols with bird and star cutout forms. They work especially well at night with an oil candle. See our photo. Upon request, we will include one complimentary bottle to get you started. It's old curled handwrought top loop is also unique- a master piece of Japanese lantern form art. Superb garden and collector work of art. May be either suspended in your favourite indoor or outdoor space., or comfortably set upon a favorite table or garden surface with it feet below. Aperture opening on bottom allows you to add an electrical fixture if you so choose. A good old example dating to the Taisho period, early 20th century, and with a blackened finish. Notice the wonderful extended roof timbers on top too- detailing we seldom see. Dimensions: 12 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide. Fine quality. All our Asian works of art are accompanied by our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. History of Japanese lanterns: In Japan a toro¯ (lantern) is a traditional lantern made of stone, wood, or metal. Like many other elements of Japanese traditional architecture, it originated in China. In Japan, to¯ro¯ were originally used only in Buddhist temples, where they lined and illuminated paths and lighted lanterns were then considered an offering. In its complete, original form the lantern represents five elements of Buddhist cosmology: Bottom touching the ground, represents chi, the earth, the next section represents sui, or water, ka or fire, is represented by the section encasing the lantern's light or flame, while fu¯ (air) and ku¯ (void or spirit) are represented by the last two sections, top-most and pointing towards the sky. These last two sections express the idea that after death our physical bodies will go back to their original, elemental form. Yukimi-do¯ro¯ or legged lanterns have as a base not a post but curved legs and a wide umbrella with a finial. Relatively low, they are used exclusively in gardens and the traditional placement is near water. The umbrella can be round or have from three to eight sides, while the fire box is usually hexagonal. Yu-loosley translated means water reflection. It was probably developed during the Momoyama period, but the oldest extant examples, found at the Katsura Villa in Kyoto, go back only to the early Edo period (17th century).

The Obelisk designed by Frank Ligthart for Dedon, 2008. No longer in production. Inspired by the Neolithic menhirs of Carnac in the French region of Brittany it is composed of two pairs of matching high- and low-back lounge chairs and a conical table. The base of the table supports all the chairs when stacked into its sculptural shape for storage. This listing is for one complete Obelisk PLUS a partial set of four chairs and table. Half the fun of owning the obelisk is actually having the obelisk tower on display. Once it is taken down to be used for seating then the giant sculpture is gone. Here we offer you the best of both worlds: a seating group of four chairs as well as the stacked Obelisk sculpture, which you won't need to disassemble until you are completely overrun with guests! The complete Obelisk cosists of two S-chairs, two M-chairs and the cone table. The near-complete additional Obelisk consists of three of the S-chairs and one M-chair plus the table. Price shown is for the complete Obelisk plus the extras. Both sets have brand new cushions. NO FURTHER DISCOUNTS. Image 8 shows the "spare" set which includes 3 "S" chairs (instead of 2) and 1 "M" chair (instead of 2) and one table base.
