Vintage Rustic Spring Steel Fan Roll Back Garden Chair Style Francois Carré

About the Item

Vintage rustic garden chair with a spring steel fan back that is also rolled and becomes the arms. Made in the style of Francois Carré. It is in wonderful rustic condition with lots of patina. It could be sanded and painted a beautiful solid color (and we can do that for you before shipping if you would like) but I love the distressed look it has now. Please see photos, circa early to mid-20th century. We have fallen in love with this garden chair here at the shop. We feel it is done in the style of Francois Carré’s spring steel sunburst chairs he designed and patented in France in 1866. That chair became so popular it was being produced by four companies in three cities: Paris, Vienna, and New York. Le Corbusier even commissioned a chair from Carré for one of his clients. This chair has a fan back that is also rolled and curves around to become the arms of this barrel style chair. The back’s strips of steel also curve down and into a half sunburst to become the back half of the seat. The front five of the rays on each side create the arms and the front half of the seat by running horizontal to the other rays. The strips of steel, or rays as we call them, are welded to the wrought iron frame. It has four square wrought legs that are part of the frame and four flat iron stretchers. We have stripped the many layers of chipped and peeling paint it had acquired over the years and left it in its unfinished rustic look, which we love, for the photographs. However, we will be happy to paint it any solid color you choose if you prefer. It fits into many style categories. It was originally designed Victorian but looks and feels Art Deco too. And yet…this one in particular…looks rather Mid-Century Modern. It will be gorgeous on any patio, deck, or porch, and in any garden. Make it yours! Fun and bright pair of white PVC Idyllwild outdoor lounge chairs with Kelly green mesh upholstery and sling designed by Jerry Johnson for Landes Manufacturing Co. They are in good vintage condition. There are signs of yellowing and some scratches to the PVC due to age and outside use. The mesh upholstery has been cleaned but does still show some signs of age including fading. I like them as is but you may prefer to recover. They are priced accordingly. Please see photos. We are selling them as a pair, circa 1960s-1970s. This pair of outdoor lounge chairs is just too cool!! They are called the Idyllwild chair and designed by Jerry Johnson for Landes Manufacturing Co. circa 1968. Johnson was also involved in creating the “new” material called polyvinyl chloride, or PVC plastic which he formed into tubes and slats to produce not only the Idyllwild chair but several other bent tubular-frame designs. This pair has a Kelly-green mesh sling as well as back and seat cushions. They are adorned with white contrasting buttons. I’m going to quote an excerpt from the book California Design by Jo Lauria and Suzanne Baizerman that best describes these chairs: Johnson’s Idyllwild chair and lounge chair and ottoman revealed the versatility of the material and its rich design possibilities. The Idyllwild chair, made of interlocking PVC tubes rolled down at the edges, presented a casual and whimsical form, while the flowing, curved geometries of the tubular-framed lounge chair and ottoman gave a move elegant and elevated presence to outdoor furnishings.
