About the Item

A wonderful 18th century English carved limestone staddle stone with original aged surfaces. The stone is covered with natural lichens, and wear that only many centuries of use can give. Staddle stones were used to elevate granaries off the ground, and their and whimsical mushroom shape were purposeful to prevent rodents from climbing up and destroying the grain crops.

Antique English Limestone Staddle Stone
Located in Dallas, TX
An 18th-century staddle stone crafted from limestone and originating from England, this piece consists of two separate components: the base and the cap. When stacked together, they form a complete staddle stone. Traditionally, staddle stones served as sturdy supports for granaries, hayricks, game larders, and similar structures. By elevating these buildings above the ground, they allowed for air circulation to prevent rot, while the cap ensured that the building and its contents were out of reach for mice and other vermin. While you may still find some staddle stones serving their original purpose in England—particularly in the Cotswolds, where most of our antique staddle stones...
