Chinese Buddhist Stone Column Stele

About the Item

Sculpted in the manner of temple columns or stele monuments, this square stone column is decorated on all four sides with Buddhist imagery carved in low relief. A seated Buddha graces each side of the column, surrounded by seated disciples, monks, and bodhisattvas. The carved figures have weathered with exposure to the elements, but still display subtle details such as the graceful folds of their robes. Worked into the natural contours of the stone, the faded carvings inspire serenity and meditation, suggestive of mist-filled grottos or hidden cave temples. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
