Large Vintage French Iron Garden Trellises or Topiaries, a Pair

About the Item

A lovely garden folly! A great vintage find. Made of iron, this pair of vintage French garden trellises or topiaries dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and has patinaed very nicely. Each trellis is solid and sturdy. They are ready to serve as stand-alone architectural garden ornaments, given their sculptural qualities and size. Or they would support a creeping flowering vine, beautifully. Each piece is capped off with a Fleur-de-Lys, a Lily that has been used as a decorative symbol of France and its monarchies since the 14th century. Though the Iron Age represented the period between 1200 and 600BC, ornamental ironwork like these garden ornaments did not become popular until the 16th century. It wasn't again until the late 19th century that ornamental ironwork had a renaissance, largely influenced by Edgar Brandt – a French ironworker and designer. His work was became known and popularized at the Arts Decoratifs Modernes exhibition in Paris in 1925. Soon thereafter his influence on ironwork design spread throughout the globe. Dimensions: The more conical trellis measures 18" diameter and 71" tall The other measures 16" diameter and 78" tall.
