Pair of Georgian Stone Sphinxes by James Gibbs

About the Item

A unique opportunity to purchase a pair of 18th century winged sphinx statues or gate pier ornaments, originally from High Head Castle, Cumbria. These date to the remodeling of the house 1744 – 48, thought to be by the renowned architect James Gibbs. A replacement pair can be seen in position on the gate piers to the front elevation of the castle. There have been repairs and restorations to some areas.
