About the Item

This pair of wide limestone vases is reminiscent of tazzas in that they are wide and shallow. Hand-carved in Italy, the richness of the carvings is accentuated by the light gray hue of the limestone, which has subtle white accents. A ring of gadroon adorns the base of each vase, just below a cavetto undercut and above a circular foot with thick moldings. Each vase is supported by a two-piece octagonal pedestal that consists of a tall column above a robust plinth with ogee molding. Our wide Italian tazza-form vases can be used as decorative elements, flanking an entryway or set of stairs. They would also make wonderful planters for any outdoor landscape.

Pair of Large French Cast Garden Vases after the Models of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 18th century garden vases, entitled Autumn, by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, this pair of large cast garden vases are in the classic krater form. A sprawling scene with mascarons, rams’ heads, and grapevines are set between egg and dart molding and gadrooned lobes. Made with a mixture of crushed stone and cement (known as reconstituted stone), the tall vases were imbued with a cream coloring agent during the casting process. Each vase is supported by a thick rectangular plinth beneath a tapering neck adorned with geometric motifs and Vitruvian waves filled with flowers. These impressive garden vases will make a wonderful statement, inside or outdoors. Originally part of a set of four vases depicting the seasons of Autumn and Spring, which were designed for the Chateau de Choisy by Ange-Jacques...
