Unique antique weather vane in handwrought iron. The weather vane is dated ‘1725’ and the plaque with the dating is made from copper. It is very unusual with such an early dating, almost 300 years old. The weather vane have been attached to a roof, most likely a church or campanile. From northern Sweden and freestanding.

This rare and large American scrollwork bannerette weathervane recalls those produced by Jonathan Howard & Co. of West Bridgewater, MA. Further academic research may confirm or deny this possibility and an origin with J.W. Fiske & Co. of New York, shouldn’t be ruled out. Alternatively, this weathervane may also be an entirely independent work from the first half of the 19th century, steeped in the early genesis of weathervanes as an American folk art.
