About the Item
19th Century French Grape Press Screw Pedestal with Amazing Patina, Converted Column
This striking 19th-century grape press screw originates from a traditional French winery, where it once served a vital role in the winemaking process. Carefully transformed into a sculptural pedestal, it retains its powerful presence and showcases an amazing original patina that speaks to its age, use, and history.
Originally, the monumental wooden screw mechanism would have driven a massive stone plate downward, crushing grapes and extracting their juice—an essential step in producing wine at scale. These towering screws were central to France’s agricultural innovation and remain icons of the country’s cultural heritage.
This particular piece has been thoughtfully adapted into a pedestal, featuring a circular top and octagonal base added later to provide stability and function. Retaining its original spiral carving and time-worn texture, the wood has aged to a warm golden tone, enhanced by cracks, tool marks, and oxidation. The deep, natural finish gives this piece its amazing patina—a surface rich with movement and story.
Two iron bands wrap the lower section, adding a bold industrial contrast and reinforcing the sculptural quality. Measuring 158 cm high x 38 cm wide (62.2" H x 15" W), it makes an excellent base for a sculpture, plant, or custom lighting.
Whether used as a decorative column, statement stand, or reimagined into a unique floor lamp, this antique pedestal brings rustic French character and handmade craftsmanship into any interior.
In wonderfully preserved original condition, this converted grape press screw is a testament to utilitarian beauty—raw, robust, and richly expressive.
Be sure to explore all the photos to fully appreciate its texture, scale, and detail.
