19th Century Pair of Painted Wood Full-Length Columns w/ Ionic Capitals

About the Item

A fantastic pair of 19th century full-length columns standing a full 104" high, they are crafted of laminated layers to create the outer curve with a series of flutes running the length. They rest over "ring-turned" profiles along the base and raise beautifully carved Greek Ionic capitals. The surface history is on full display with the various layers of old paint built up and showing the scars of time, the separation cracks and various losses and old repairs. They are a striking design element where scale of texture is needed in the interior - and while they are very fine as a pair, a skilled craftsman could likely split them into pilasters. Note: the photographs show a lens distortion that makes the columns appear to "swell" slightly in the center, but naturally this is not the case in person; also the lighting makes the paint appear more cool and white than is actually correct - it has a slightly more beige tone with discolorations and grime throughout; if correct color is important, please let us know and we will try to take a color corrected image for you to match for the interior. Measurements: 104" H x 22" W x 22" D (top); 16" W x 16" D (bottom) Condition Report: Many layers of later paint throughout, much of it discolored and overall with surface patina; numerous large chips out of the capitals; separations throughout, including numerous seams between the laminations of column fluting as well as open seams between the capital and the column; a conforming metal sheeting is applied to the top, bent and damaged; depending on your taste, they are ready to place, but certainly could be improved or restored for a more tidy aesthetic.
