Italian Gilt Bronze And Marble Pedestal With Urn

About the Item

This exquisite Italian pedestal and urn, masterfully crafted from the esteemed Alabastro Fiorito Antico marble, represents the very finest of 19th-century Italian craftsmanship. Alabastro Fiorito Antico marble is one of the most sought-after and rare ancient stones, known for its exceptional coloration, distinct veining and remarkable shine. The origins of this marble trace back to the vicinity of Thebes in Egypt, near the castle of Alabastro, as documented by Pliny the Elder. Its allure captivated the Romans, who began importing it in the 2nd century BC for creating sculptures of deities and important people and containers for ointments and perfumes. The stone’s rarity and splendor also led to its use in crafting fine columns for wealthy estates, such as those displayed in the Museum of the Villa Albani. 19th century 58“ high x 10 1/2” diameter
